BIO

Luis E. Poza is a husband, father, former elementary school teacher, and current Associate Professor of Teacher Education in the Connie L. Lurie College of Education at San José State University, where he also serves as the Director of the Institute for Emancipatory Education. Luis’s research examines how ideologies of language, race, class, and nation are embedded in educational policy and practice for bilingual learners, most recently with a focus on ensuring that bilingual learners can meaningfully participate and benefit from new Ethnic Studies requirements in California. His publications have appeared in Harvard Educational Review, Journal of Education Policy, Language Policy, Bilingual Research Journal, and Whittier Law Review, among other venues. Luis coordinates SJSU’s Ethnic Studies Teacher Residency and Male Educators of Color Initiative programs and teaches about multicultural education, bilingual education, and the roles of language and education in human rights frameworks.
