SUSIE YORK

“It's wild here and I like it and I want to work here. It's the rainbow of community. And this is where I want to be.”

BIO

My name is Susie York and I’m a registered nurse. I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico and raised in San Jose. For the last eight years, I have had the pleasure to work alongside an amazing team of nurses on 4 medical at Valley Medical Center (VMC). My journey in nursing began with an associate degree from Evergreen Valley College, followed by a bachelor's degree from San Jose State University. I am honored to currently serve as the President of the Registered Nurses Professional Association (RNPA), where I advocate for the nursing community and promote excellence in patient care.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Susie shares her experiences of working as a registered nurse and as president of the RNPA including her upbringing and career trajectory, her push into a union and current role, the buildup and organizing of the union, the frustrations that come with negotiating with upper-management, and a major win for the nurses. Susie also speaks about the rise of privatization within the medical field and the consequences for primarily impoverished and marginalized communities, and her thoughts about her colleagues (near and far) providing support to the people in Gaza.
