San Jose experts discuss Wage theft

What is a worker supposed to do when an employer — someone who can penalize you or even terminate your employment — isn’t paying you for working overtime, holiday pay or the breaks you’ve worked though? It can feel daunting to have these conversations, but it shouldn’t. At least that is what three local experts believe.

On this episode we talk with Ruth, Jean and David about wage theft. In our conversation we examine examples of wage theft ranging from smaller, less obvious violations to larger and much more awful infringements that crossover into human rights violation territory (Silvery Towers). On this point, David compares wage theft to an ice berg since a lot of the more obvious examples of wage theft are only the ones we notice. Ruth also notes in this episode that wage theft, in many industries where it is more egregious, isn’t just innocent oversight but actually the way those industry are structured to be most profitable.
